One year ago today, Rachel Kramer Bussel rocked my world with an email containing a contract for The Big Book of Orgasms.
I didn’t see the email right away because I was coming back from Colorado and my plane had been snowed in. I ended up getting home a day later than planned, and on top of that, I’d had a date cancel on me by telling me he was seeing another girl—not ten minutes after I picked up my suitcase. Bummer, right? I got home super late and annoyed.
But then I checked my email…and started running around the house screaming like a lunatic at almost midnight.
So, I guess that makes today an anniversary of sorts—the one-year anniversary of acceptance on my first published erotica piece. Hurray!
To celebrate, I’d like to tell you about The Big Book of Orgasms in audio form from Audible!
I just finished listening to this audiobook read by the wonderfully talented Rose Caraway, and I have to tell you, it’s quite fun. Rose is extraordinary at conveying the sexiness of each individual character, as well as the overall heat of the tales themselves. I left a full review on Audible, but let’s just say that some of these stories really popped out loud, as if they were destined to be read by Rose’s divine voice. As for my little story, “The Flogger” — I may have read it live, but hearing Rose perform it was superb.

“You never told me about this.” Julian waved the flogger around, and it almost looked as if his shaft hardened.
She had to be imagining this.
“I did…once.” It was five years ago, when they’d just started telling each other their fantasies—long before they’d moved in together. She’d hidden it in the back of the closet since she never imagined it as Julian’s sort of thing.
His brow furrowed as he swung it, the tassels tapping his thighs.
“Hmm,” he said, reasoning. “Well, I suppose you should come here and…take off your clothes.”
Katie chuckled, but beneath her shirt, her nipples peaked. She walked over and dipped in for a kiss, except Julian held up his free hand. “No.” He rapped the rounded steel cap against her sternum and she jumped. “I mean it. Take them off.”
Her breath caught in her throat. Julian could be an animal in bed, but he never gave her orders.
“You heard me, Katie.” He grinned. “Do it now.”
She unbuttoned her blouse while Julian watched, and he swung the flogger back and forth, the suede leather slapping his skin. She kept her eyes locked on his pelvis, noting that his cock had indeed stiffened with the movement.
“Faster.” Julian tapped her hip. “All of it.”
A spasm rippled through her inner walls. She dropped her shirt to the floor, and Julian plucked her nipples through the sheer lace of her bra, nodding.
“Bra. Skirt. Now.”
She stripped them off.
“Good. Now take off your panties.”
Katie leaned again to kiss him, but he put a hand over her lips.
“Nope. Panties off.”
She hooked her thumbs under the waistband, her crevice already drenched before the cotton hit the floor.
“Spread your legs.”
Something in his voice sent her pulse racing.

In my younger years, I wrote a lot of poetry. It started in elementary school, when apparently I wrote material so dark the principal kept calling my parents in to discuss my suicidal tendencies (sorry, mom). This random fact has always surprised me, since I’m an eternal optimist—as in, “Screw the glass half full, I have a glass!”—but it is what it is. Little me wrote deep, dark, angry poems.
In high school, I switched gears and began writing deep, dark, dramatic poems. Huge improvement, right? Suddenly, I was not only writing about blackening flowers and body-bruising windstorms but bemoaning the loss of various heart breaker boyfriends. I wrote poems multiple times a day, and in fact, I still have my tattered-page journals filled with heart-wrenching verse and doodles I couldn’t make sense of if I tried. But eventually, the urge wore off; I realized I preferred fiction to poetry…
With the exception of erotic poetry. This was my little secret—all those deep, dark emotions I used to channel had turned into something sexier, sultrier, more explicit. Occasionally, I passed a piece on to a lucky boyfriend. Mostly, I kept it on my hard drive just for me.
That is, until today.

Well, they have a fondness for erotic poetry, too, and now, I’m delighted to debut my first public erotic poem! Okay, that wasn’t exactly how it went, but I got your attention, didn’t I? 🙂
Here’s the real story: Malin James and I have become super close pals since the release of The Big Book of Orgasms: 69 Sexy Stories. She had a fabulous little story in there called “Hard Knocks” (check it out if you haven’t read it!), and after we met at the reading at Good Vibrations in San Francisco, we decided to start emailing one another all the time and proudly established monthly “shop” lunches. It’s been delightful!
So, when we got together this weekend, we decided to scavenge through Barnes and Noble in search of the book we shared pages in. It took a few tries, because somehow, the smut was scattered all over the place. There were a bunch of Cleis Press anthologies in “Literature and Essays” (what?), and then a bounty of more nonfiction erotic options under “Love and Sexuality.” This section included how-to manuals and Penthouse Letters, and somehow, the little book that could—AKA The Big Book of Orgasms—got shoved over here. (Yeah, we didn’t get it either. In fact, we debated rearranging the store for a minute, but our Thai lunch was calling.)
Since it was very exciting to see this excellent book in the store, we opted to take a picture with it. This also took a few tries (damn iPhones) and caused a tiny bit of a scene…I mean, we were holding quite a hot looking orgasm book and giggling as we attempted to center our faces plus the sexy cover image into the viewfinder without looking. But hey! It turned out okay, so we posted it on Facebook and Twitter. And then our wonderful editor, Rachel Kramer Bussel, liked the photo so much she reposted it…with a challenge!

Today’s post is a bit of a hodgepodge, but I’ve got lots of great news to share!

Wow! Our fabulous editor, Rachel Kramer Bussel, did an amazing job getting this book out into the world and in people’s hands, and it clearly paid off! I couldn’t be more delighted to be part of this book. I also finally finished reading the entire anthology and can confirm that every story was a treat. Haven’t picked it up yet? Things got even more exciting when Ms. Bussel announced that Rose Caraway of The Kiss Me Quicks would be narrating The Big Book of Orgasms! No word on a release date just yet, but I’m a big fan of Ms. Caraway’s podcasts. She did a fantastic two-hour year-end show called “Halo Sex,” which included multiple sexy stories narrated to NIN’s music—you should check it out if you haven’t heard it yet! It was hot!

Lastly, I’m happy to report some personal news—I’ve been hard at work on my first erotica novel. *Squee!* After penning a couple dozen shorts (and as mentioned in my previous post, a couple non-erotica novels), I decided it was high time to take on the ultimate marathon novel. Thanks to a little holiday free-time and my somewhat insane tendencies toward hyper-focused dedication (did I put on pants today?), I’m about three-quarters of the way through. I was going to get one of those nifty counter thingies to put over on my sidebar because they tickle me, but by the time I remembered, I was already at 58k. Uh, whoops. Next book. 😉
Anyway, this is quite thrilling (at least, for me). I set some steep 2014 goals for myself and I’m ready to tackle them all! Stay tuned for more news on the novel as I progress on through…
